Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum The Schoolroom Museum in Great Ayton is housed in a building once used as a charity school which was founded in 1704 by Michael Postgate, a local landowner. It was here, between 1736 and 1740, that Captain James Cook received his early education.
https://www.captcook-greatayton.com/ Great Ayton, the boy hood home of Captain James Cook, is today a much different village to that in which James lived as a young boy in the early 18th century. It has changed over the years from a farming centre to an industrialised area and now welcomes visitors to enjoy a beautiful village and Cook heritage trail.
VisitGreatAyton Great Ayton provides a wonderful base for exploring the local area. There are numerous possibilities for family activities, for road and mountain biking, walking, hiking and running, for fishing, for painting and photography and plenty of opportunities for budding horticulturists and wildlife lovers to explore the natural landscapes. Great Ayton welcomes everyone, bring your family, bring your friends, use your senses and explore.
