Minutes

The minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday 9th December 2003 were approved and signed.

Police Business

There was no police representative in attendance. Councillor Bell reported that there had been an attempted burglary at his home. The police had responded promptly.

Cemetery

Mr Atkinson reported that a headstone had fallen over. The relatives of the deceased would be advised and asked to reinstate it. Several headstones were leaning. Mr Atkinson would list them and the clerk would send letters indicating the Council’s concern. Mr Atkinson said that memorial stones were being put up before the ground had had time to settle. Monumental masons would be asked to delay the erection of headstones until 6 months after interment, and to check stones already in place.

Christmas - report on events The weather had been poor for the carols round the Christmas tree and the collection down as a result. The float, however, had been very successful and the collection up on last year. It was agreed that the donation of the carol singing collection to Yatton House be increased to £300, in line with previous years’ collections, and that a further sum of £100 be donated from the float collection to the Margaret Bradley School of Dance to aid them with their dance trip to Disneyland. It was agreed that future float collections, minus expenses, could be ring-fenced for one-off donations to children’s organisations for special events. Such a Christmas gift might vary from year to year and would need to be flexible.
Councillors commented on how nice it was that the shopkeepers had responded to the lights competition and the village looked much brighter as a result. Prizes were awarded, in order, to Swans Jewellers, The Royal Oak and The Tile Sheds. Thompsons Hardware was highly commended for its internal display. Householders, too, were praised for their efforts.
Repair to pavilion Minute continued
Flooding on Roseberry estate Minute continued
Urban foxes The RSPCA had responded that they did not operate a policy of trapping urban foxes and releasing them in the countryside.
Councillor Bell left the meeting.

Councillors’ reports

Councillor Mrs Greenwell had received a complaint from the Headmistress of Marwood School about problems with parking outside the school. She would like signs “staff parking only” painted on road. Councillor Fletcher asked if the Parish Council was not awaiting a scheme to be implemented. It would be wrong to support change whilst a scheme was in progress. Investigation would be made into the current position.Councillor Fletcher had received correspondence regarding safety of children along Yarm Lane. The Parish Council had no objection to the proposal for a new footway along Yarm Lane, nor to the possibility of extending the field footpath. Councillors commented that they disliked the design of the new bus shelters which were felt to be inappropriate for a country location. They felt that the village was being turned into a town. A letter would be sent to Highways.
Councillor Mrs Imeson asked if there had been any complaints about lorries at the rear of the Co-op. When lorries unloaded at the front of the shop there had been complaints about parking spaces being taken up. It was felt that the rear of the shop was the proper place to unload.

The date of the following meeting would be Tuesday 3rd February 2004.
