GREAT AYTON - CHRISTMAS

The cold weather doesn't discourage the Great Ayton residents from joining in the Parish Council's festive programme at Christmas time.  The three church leaders, ably assisted by Joseph, Angel Gabriel, Donkey and Santa himself, introduce the carols while the congregation join in with enthusiasm which befits the occasion.  Occasionally it is believed that members of the band have to have their instruments surgically removed from their lips as a result of the freeeeezing weather, but their mellow music provides the tradional accompaniment for the villagers in the singing of their favourite carols.  The children too sing their own "Away in a Manger".

Santa calls in and tours the village on his sleigh drawn by his two favorite reindeer Dasher and Dancer.  He is joined on his sleigh by elves and pixies who hand out treats to the village children.  There is sometimes concern that severe weather may create problems for even his specialised mode of transport, but assisted at times by a trusty red Land Rover he has always completed his tour of the village to the delight of all.

Collections are made at both events in support of local charities.
